Everything You Need to Know About “Whole Potta Love”

Our succulent-themed cake is called Whole Potta Love (cute, right?). This cake, along with all of our Cake Shop cakes can be customized with different flavors of cake layers and fillings. Here are a few of the reasons the Whole Potta Love is an ideal option, perfect for making your succulent cake dreams a reality (and fast!):

  • Realistic-looking leaves: The realistic looking leaves that sit on top of the cake are actually shaped and decorated fondant!

  • Delicious dirt: Who doesn’t love Oreo dirt? This fun detail is both delicious and nostalgic!

  • A clever pot design: The finishing touch is the base of the cake which is designed to look just like a potted plant.

Tips for DIY Succulent Cake Ideas

Feeling confident and ready to create your own succulent cake at home? Here are a few tips to help you make it happen:

  1. Pick the right tools (a piping bag is a must!): If you’re going to attempt any kind of succulent cake at home, make sure you’re using the right tools. If you want to pipe your buttercream succulents on the cake, you’ll need good piping bags, a flower nail, and a set of piping tips that includes a leaf tip. You'll also want to pipe stars on your cake to help make the plants look more realistic. If you’re going to try your hand at fondant decorations, you’ll need fondant tools to make sure your decorations look their best. All of these tools and more of Erin’s favorites can be found right here

  2. Focus on colors: Depending on the types of succulents you’re creating, you’ll want to mix the following shades: dusty pink, greens, purples, yellows, and other similar color combinations for the most realistic look. Consider making a few different shades of your green color to add more dimension to the design. Combine juniper green, with moss green and other accent colors to get the look you want.

  3. Add soil: We choose to use Oreo crumbs for our soil, but you can also use crushed graham crackers and even mix in a little brown sugar to give your soil a little extra oomph.

  4. Make a statement: If you're going to do succulents, do succulents. Think bold buttercream flowers, tiny fondant cacti, and sculpted succulent cake toppers that bring serious desert drama.
